A finger-prick test measures glucose directly from your blood, while a CGM measures it from the fluid just under your skin. There can be a small lag between the two, but modern CGMs are highly reliable. Their real strength isn't in one single reading, but in showing you the trends and patterns throughout the day, which is something a finger prick can't do.

Are CGMs expensive, and will my insurance cover it? Cost and coverage are definitely important factors, but access to CGMs is getting better all the time. Many insurance plans now cover CGMs for people with type 2 diabetes, even those not on insulin. It's always best to check directly with your provider to understand your specific benefits. You can also often use funds from an FSA or HSA, which makes it a more manageable investment in your long-term health.
